Vaman is one of the five main procedures of panchakarma.
Vaman means emesis. Or, in simple words the process of inducing vomiting to get rid of toxins in order to feel better and healthier. It is mainly used to treat kapha dosha related conditions.
Time and work takes a toll on the body, hence certain kapha toxins get accumulated in the body. Vaman therapy is recommended in order to remove these toxins from the respiratory tract and from urdhwa jatru gata dosh (literally, removing toxins from all parts of the body above the shoulders). The vaman therapeutic process is a medicated emesis therapy whereby the toxins are released through the mouth by inducing vomiting. The toxins are loosened and mobilized in an effort to eliminate them from the body. Unnecessary accumulated items within the body (vitiated dosha) are eliminated through the upper gastrointestinal tract. Thereafter the sinus is cleared, thus providing relief from congestion, wheezing and shortness of breath.
Vaman therapy is recommended for various skin disorders, upper respiratory tract diseases, sinusitis, etc.
